Box 1 directions

From Gavin parkway turn east on Papago Park Drive (right if coming from Van Buren, Left if from McDowell).

Stay left an d turn levt towards the picnic areas and ranger station. Stay on main road passing the ranger station and the sign for hole in the rock. Park at ramada 16.

Behind Ramada 16 find path leading uphill (behind the restrooms)

At the Tomb of the 1st, 2nd,3rd ,6th ,7th ,8th, and 10th governor of the State of Arizona find the steps on the east side.

At 98 degrees magnetic you will see a dirt path leading off the paved road (blocked to cars by a metal gate with a no parking sign.

Follow this dirt path for 250 steps beyond the end of the pavement.

At about 160 steps you will see a path leading of to the left heading in the same direction as Four Peaks (visible in the distance if the air is clear).

Stay on the main path. At 250 steps there is a blok of concrete on the right with 3 pieces of rebar poking out of the top.

At this point the hump of Camelback is at 335 deg and a bouldeer in a notch is at 235 deg.

If you go under powerlines or hit a concrete path you have gone too far.

The box is in in the split in the concrete block.

Consider wearing a work glove when you reach in to help protect against insects. Remember this is still the Sonoran desert and home to rattlesnakes, scorpions and black widow spiders. Seek this box at your own risk and be careful.



Box 2 directions

From Gavin parkway turn west on Papago Park Drive (Left if coming from Van Buren, Right if from McDowell).


Follow the road to a parking lot by a ramada.
Park here.


North of this ramada, beneath the buttes is Eliot Ramada. Follow the paved road to the Elio Ramada (Road closed to vehicular traffic)


From Eliot Ramada go SSW to an orienteering course.

Find the pace course start pylon (white concrete) Go SW 100m to the end of the pace coourse

From end of 100m pace course go uphill to the unmarked trailpost. Follow low trail right around monoliths to second trail post after turn.

At this point the Tallest boulder should be at 55 deg

The tallest builting in downtown Phoenix should be at 250 deg

Piestewa peak should be at 315 deg (magnetic)

Go 70 steps along a bearing of 230 deg

Find a granite boulder near 3 smal creosote bushes. The box is in a crevice under the boulder.

Box 3 directions

The road leading to Elliot ramada ( See directions for Box 2) mkes a sharp turn just before it ends near the ramada. Go to portion of the road just south of this turn.

Take the trail leading off the road at 105 deg (magnetic). This is in the direction of a conical mountain in the mid distance. If you find yourself going up the side of the Butte then you have picked the wrong trail.

As you follow the trail count the trail posts (TPs).

At TP1 the trail forks. Take the left trail (95 deg)

At TP2 go straight (85 deg)

Between TP2 & # stay to the Right.

At TP3 take the "lower" trail keeping TP3 on L

At TP4 continue on trail (65 deg).

At TP 6 continue down the trail 30 Steps.

At this point there is a a natural arch at 245 deg

A saguaro at 326 deg

A double saguaro at 51 deg.

Take 18 steps at 62 deg to two boulders 12 ft to the right of the doouble saguaro. It is in the cleft between the two boulders.
